Sigh. This dumb pithy response (pictured below) has been making the rounds on Reddit: https://i.redd.it/lb83yjprmie71.jpg … And it is infuriating how many people are going to take the ignorant 'life is not Netflix' response for truth when it comes from a place of frank historical illiteracy.
We *just* discussed this issue on ACOUP (https://acoup.blog/2021/07/23/collections-the-queens-latin-or-who-were-the-romans-part-iv-the-color-of-purple/ …), so I don't need to get too deep into the details...but yes, for the nth time, those emperor's face reconstructions you keep seeing are substantially too fair skinned.
So much so that the fellow who originally mad them went and produced a version 2.0 (which, while it's a step in the right direction, probably presents Roman emperors as *still* too fair skinned) to correct several of the most egregious errors.
So much of Twitter and Reddit reward the ignorant response when it is concise and forceful and most importantly flatters the preconceived notions of the readers, whatever they may be. Seek truth, not self-flattering truthiness.
