Next pedagogy poll: are mandatory office hours a good idea? I've never done this, & instead have always had coming to OH boost participation grades (which are themselves yet another debate). If I did implement this, it would be over Zoom with flexible scheduling.
I will make office hours non-optional for students who are struggling with writing assignments (and encouraged, of course, for everyone else), though to be honest, most who are at that point are already so checked out that they won't even come to non-optional office hours.
That said, I have had the required post-catastrophe paper-writing office hours pull students off of the sidelines who I am fairly certain would not have responded to an optional meeting and it meaningfully improved their work.
I feel like non-optional hours might have been useful during COVID itself; my junior year was agony beyond description.
