One thing I love about having my blog is that nothing I write there just vanishes - a few people are reading each page every day. Google Analytics lets me see people doing so in real-time. As I write this, I can see people working through Helm's Deep and the Dothraki.

Been doing another meander through the Face of Battle! The walk throughs for agriculture and the “Practical Polytheism” made for a lot of fun when my DM asked for worldbuilding help, thanks for writing those!

Just finished part 4 (I mean, part IV) of the Romans one, and looking forward to the thrilling conclusion!

Not only are we reading them - I'm the one who's currently on the Loot Train posts, and I'm *re-reading* the archive, because I need something comfortable and pedantic to read to get me through this week. Your work is appreciated both intellectually and emotionally. <3

Brett: I really like your blog and it’s given me new insight into history. For example: Until you understand the logistics & constraints a medieval army worked under you massively overestimate capabilities & underestimate costs.
-
Also sieges look different when you realise that the attacking army may have to go home in 6 weeks to get the harvest in, and will probably run out of food before the people in the castle do. Why do we teach history without a basic understanding of logistics?

I can honestly say your blog has been teaching me more than several years of history classes in school. When I stumbled upon your blog, I started working my way back all the way to the first post. Now I eagerly look forward to every Friday and I recommend it to everyone :)

Your work has become the thing that occupies me as I feed the baby before he goes to bed. Really enjoyed the series on Sparta, Fremen Myth, working through Queen’s Latin now.

Oh, and Europa Universalis and Valhalla were interesting to me as a gamer and developer!

More of that to come. We're going to look at Victoria II before too long. It's a pretty good complement discussion to the discussion of EU4

Honestly, this is a big part of the appeal of writing fanfiction for me. When I produce academic work it's vanished into the void so far as I'm concerned. No thank you from my advisor, no way to get positive feedback from people it's useful for, no way to know if it is useful.
-
Every day I get to wake up and see that a few more people liked the fanfiction stories I've created. Every couple of weeks I'll get a comment from someone telling me how much it meant to them. It's a lot easier to get out of bed in the morning because of that than for academia.
