Might have something to do with the fact that even if academics aren’t paid huge sums, you usually need come from a well-off background to be able to afford spending a decade getting your PhD.
This can be true, but isn't always - note for instance, @WorkClassicists . I come from a well-off background, but certainly not all academics do and sometimes the assumption that we are mostly already well-off leads to policies which make it harder for academics who aren't.
