I'm always puzzled by the Hollywood tendency to depict as academics as these detached, wealthy almost-patrician figures - fancy suits, expensive cars, fine wines and well-appointed offices. What schools did all of these screen-writers go to? And are they hiring?
We did? I didn't think anyone I took classes with was quite that high, and I'll admit that, it being public information I once checked. I can believe a few members of the department might be up there, but my impression was that most of the distinguished were in the 120-160 range.

I mean, that's still a lot - enough to put them in the upper quintile as a single-earner. And yet still no wood-paneled offices!

Yeah, I just think most of the time when movie or TV characters consult with academics they're picturing high-end private institutions, where star profs are also disproportionately likely to be benefiting from supplementary earnings of various kinds in addition to base salary
