I'm actually not sure this is true. Endowed chairs at elite schools can pay a quarter million dollars a year or more, which is satisfactorily cigar-chomping money as far as I'm concerned, particularly when you consider that the holders almost all *came* from money also.
Depends on how we define elite here though. Endowed chairs at top-tier state schools make typically half of that. I mean, to be clear, it's still a lot. I think a lot of academics with jobs do not grapple as much as they should with how high they are on the income ladder.
