Now, to be clear, at least on the tenure-track, professors are hardly poor. TT starting salaries in the humanities are usually something like 1.5-2x the median personal income (note, *personal* not household) in the USA.

I'm always puzzled by the Hollywood tendency to depict as academics as these detached, wealthy almost-patrician figures - fancy suits, expensive cars, fine wines and well-appointed offices. What schools did all of these screen-writers go to? And are they hiring?

But we're hardly talking cigar-chomping-in-our-wood-paneled-offices money there, even for successful, late-career academics.

1) Lots of deans and provosts offices are more like that. 2) Many Hollywood people don't to conventional colleges, so they don't have any personal experience. 3) Circularity: in many areas (not just this), Hollywood's idea of what things are like is informed by their own movies.

To be fair, the Hollywood tendency seems to be to do this to nearly everyone. Unless you are a salt-of-the-earth blue collar type character, you always have more fanciness than most real life people would have in your position.
