Shows what I know. I was thinking a tercio at Rocroi.

No shields in a tercio and you need muskets; the 'shot' is as much a part of the tercio as the pike. Though it'd be cool if it was a tercio - pike-and-shot warfare needs to figure into more pop-culture.

Interestingly, in the sixth century the phalanx more often than not meant the infantry formation [Strategikon]. Classicising historians such as Procopius, Agathias + Theophylact all refer to infantry, nominally in pitched battles, as phalanx. Although they did use oval shields…
