Aragon wins and becomes king. Selflessly perhaps, but still a crown at the end.
Also, Aragorn is at home with this sort of thing; he's uncomfortable with kingship, but comfortable with violence and war. Theoden too. What I like about Faramir or Sam is that they're not. It isn't glorious for them, merely a sad necessity, but they do it all the same.

Book Aragorn is executing / accomplishing a plan for the restoration of his kingship he had been working on for something like a century. The conclusion of that work was more difficult but also far more enduring than he had any right to expect.

This is by way of saying, I agree with your point. Also, the "reluctant leader" thing was my least favorite change the movies made to the books.
