Modern, I believe. They're a way to teach all of the different things a case can do and useful in instances like this when you want to dig down on a phrase, though at some point (esp. for the dative) at some point they all just blend together into 'it's a dative'
I never could get the hang of them! Ablative absolute is the only one burned into memory
