Basically, what I'm asking is for the philologists: which sort of ablative is 'a rationibus' do you reckon? Abl of Source ('from accounts')? Agent ('by accounts')? Cause/Motive ('For accounts' - but odd preposition to use)? Instrument ('with accounts)? etc.
Were these descriptions something Latin speakers actually came up with or is this just a later categorization?
These titles appear in our primary sources. Mostly in inscriptions.
Saying something like "secretary for accounts" seems natural enough to me (and is the right flavour of ablative, I think.) But I'm a British English speaker, as you can tell by the way I spell "flavour", so that might make a difference.
Sure, but my point is the title isn't, say, 'Scriba rationum' (Secretary of Accounts) or 'Scriba rationibus' (Secretary for Accounts w/ rationibus in the dative), it's 'a rationibus' where the preposition 'a' makes it clear rationibus is in the ablative.
