Basically, what I'm asking is for the philologists: which sort of ablative is 'a rationibus' do you reckon? Abl of Source ('from accounts')? Agent ('by accounts')? Cause/Motive ('For accounts' - but odd preposition to use)? Instrument ('with accounts)? etc.
A translation which preserves the literal meaning while also making the intended/contextual meaning clear? The dream of translators everywhere.
Have you considered describing the different implications of 2+ more options & explaining which one you favor, and why? In translation, there often isn't a single best answer. Given how well you describe (in ACOUP) the thought processes historians use, I'd be interested.
