For my own part, I am torn. I'd much rather the scholarship of today than the scholarship of yesteryear. But, statistically, I'd be a fool not to wish for the job market of 2005 or 2000 or 1995 over the job market of 2020 or even 2019.
I will admit, I don't have detailed data for Classics so you may be right! For history generally, the AHA does keep pretty detailed data which shows that, at least for history, the period post 2009 is by far the worst academic job market since the 70s:pic.twitter.com/hary1311r1
