Ok, I have a #teachancient question for all you ancient warfare aficionados out there. If you were going to do a close look at 4 and only 4 battles with undergrads, which ones would you choose?

I will note that Murray Dahm's most recent Osprey book offers a few interesting proposals RE the smoke, the cavalry, and other things though at Adrianople, so I'm not gonna throw it completely under the bus as a bad choice for discussing tactics and strategy.
As the last battle on the list, giving students a battle with a troubled source base strikes me as a good exercise, but I picked it because it both seems to exemplify the changing late antique military situation, but also also a major event in and of itself.

See I fall into the camp that both Adrianople and Frigeridus are overemphasized. Dara better represents the changing face of the late antique military because of its emphasis on flexible cavalry, something which is implemented earlier but not well documented before then.

One could make that argument with Aetius' campaigns, but they're not well documented is the issue.

I'm not opposed to troubled source-base, except that I'm leaning toward having groups of students guide the discussions on each of these, in which case throwing a monkey-wrench in with the source base could be too much. Perhaps as a final one we do together or something.
