Ok, I have a #teachancient question for all you ancient warfare aficionados out there. If you were going to do a close look at 4 and only 4 battles with undergrads, which ones would you choose?

1) Kadesh (1274BC) 2) Salamis (480 BC) 3) Aegates (241 BC) 4) Adrianople (378 AD) If I got a fifth, it'd be Gaugamela.
(I know Kadesh is out of the date range, but I'd really want to push the date range to include it. If you can't, replace it with either Cunaxa (401) or Gaugemela (331)

I’m mostly restricting the date range because even that seems like an immense amount to explore when I want to balance arms/equipment/tactics with the relationship between war and society.

Adrianople was really a mess. I'd argue if you wanted to look at a late antique Battle, Dara or Taginae would be better choices.
