RFI: 1. Any suggestions for good work that focus on *failed* military innovations? 2. Have I missed any scholars who broaden the standard definition of innovation to include changes that *decrease* military effectiveness? Any and all recommendations appreciated.

I don't think Murray necessarily calls them a dead end, so much as they were overtaken by events; the powers that used them fell for other reasons, and when this process was complete, there was no longer any use for naval siege platforms on a 'Roman lake'
I'm not saying Murray does, I'm saying I do; Murray's book is the latest and greatest on them. But for my own part, I think there were probably fairly good reasons why the two most capable navies in the Mediterranean opted not to use more than handful of ships bigger than a six.
