One thing I wonder with his data is the impact of the last five or so years. Without breaking Conservative-Academic-Omerta, most of the right-leaning historians I know shifted party or went independent/NeverTrump because they couldn't tolerate shifts in the GOP platform.

The real cleavage is whether or not one goes down the post liberal path. Most of those historians were probably little-l liberals so it’s not a surprise that happened.
