How might a better article read? Perhaps: "The 'Marian Reforms' is a term applied by modern scholars to refer to a series of changes in the Roman army of the Late Republic, beginning in the mid-second century and continuing through the first century. ...

I think the fundamental problem is people wanting / needing to invent a definitive answer even if in reality 'we don't really know. But it wasn't Marius' ;-)

Is this the transition between two named eras in the Roman army? (Mid Republican vs Late Republican or something) Also, is the shift in army structure/tactics actually tied to reduced reliance on drafted property owners?

I think it's come about partly because we 'know' (or think we know) what the army was like from Polybius and from Caesar, and the differences have to be accounted for. Marius is in the middle and lit. sources credit him with some minor changes.
