Also, while I get what the World History Encyclopedia is trying to do (used to be Ancient History Encyclopedia), every time I look at one of their articles I find significant problems; Wikipedia is almost always better and you know well the limitations of Wikipedia.
Yup. Much better and yet much less well known example of this sort of thing. A tremendous loss, especially given how limited the evidence for pre-contact societies is.
Who destroyed the Library of Alexandria and in which year?
I read once that it kinda just fell into disrepair mainly because no one wanted to pay for it. how accurate is that?
I was always of the impression that rescuing books from the Library of Alexandria would be a big thing for "what if a historian had a time machine?" Which begot the question: When/where would *you* go with a time machine?
