You know, I recall DVDs being marketed as lasting basically forever, but I didn't buy any of mine earlier than 2002 or so (we were slow to get a DVD player) and I swear every time I got to use one, there's a 50% chance it won't play or plays only with significant errors.

The shorthand I was taught back in the '90s was LOCKSS: Lots Of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe. Widespread remote storage like Amazon and Steam's backends are Lots Of Copies, and they recopy to new media regularly. That said, I'd honestly suspect drive failure before disk damage first.
