You know, I recall DVDs being marketed as lasting basically forever, but I didn't buy any of mine earlier than 2002 or so (we were slow to get a DVD player) and I swear every time I got to use one, there's a 50% chance it won't play or plays only with significant errors.
These are disks, to be clear, that have lived their years in their original cases, in room temperature on shelves that don't get direct sunlight. Many are not what I'd think would qualify as heavily used.
And yet 
I HAD a collection of rare VHS, and then tape rot set in
Yeah, VHS doesn't do any better, to be fair. Mostly it makes me a lot less bothered by the 'but your digital media will go away!' arguments because at this point, Amazon and Steam have shown more longevity than my physical disks.
Consider the ramifications of this issue too for archival work
