These are disks, to be clear, that have lived their years in their original cases, in room temperature on shelves that don't get direct sunlight. Many are not what I'd think would qualify as heavily used.

You know, I recall DVDs being marketed as lasting basically forever, but I didn't buy any of mine earlier than 2002 or so (we were slow to get a DVD player) and I swear every time I got to use one, there's a 50% chance it won't play or plays only with significant errors.

I don't remember this sort of claim being made, but as someone who used to do a lot of data storage in CDs and DVDs, yes, they're highly unreliable over time.

The point was that VHS was analog and DVDs were digital but that’s a hard distinction to explain to people so I can see how that translated into “lasting forever”. Im also told that most DVD damage is superficial and can be restored.
