I will hazard that some of those reader-commenters might have gone and looked at the survey results in question (which I linked to) and done a bit of math to see what the relevant groups could add up to rather than declaring I was "risibly wrong."

And not every person of British descent came to the USA before 1790 either! I have quite a few naturalized British-American friends and colleagues. So as you say, the real number must be lower than that 17.7%.
