They were indeed amazing when people used them for reading or borrowing books.
So, people still do that. But also the library as public internet cafe is also an incredible thing. We - correctly, I think - recognized the internet as the new book and thought "we need, at considerable expense, to put these in our libraries to be available for free."
I am a bit sour at the tendency for universities in particular to convert their libraries into meeting places, rather than reading places but at least the *public* libraries I have known have all resisted that quite successfully and remain book-and-computer houses.
Nobody wants to read any more. Universities understand this better than anyone.
