But most public libraries I've seen were built for the readers, not the builders. It's one of those modern things where I think we ought to keep our sense of wonder. And since librarians make that all possible, they amaze me too. But also, people, c'mon, libraries have rules.
All of this, I suppose, is one sub-point in my larger sense that studying the ancient past (rather more representative of most of human history than the present) impresses one with how marvelous our now is and so also the public-spirited folks that make that now possible.
For me, you picked a weird time to say this. Our chicken-poop libraries aren't open to the public despite >80% vaccinated rates and <1% test positive rates. They "quarantine" books for an extended period of time, and ostentatiously wipe down the table where they hand out books
