All of this, I suppose, is one sub-point in my larger sense that studying the ancient past (rather more representative of most of human history than the present) impresses one with how marvelous our now is and so also the public-spirited folks that make that now possible.

They were indeed amazing when people used them for reading or borrowing books.

So, people still do that. But also the library as public internet cafe is also an incredible thing. We - correctly, I think - recognized the internet as the new book and thought "we need, at considerable expense, to put these in our libraries to be available for free."
