But most public libraries I've seen were built for the readers, not the builders. It's one of those modern things where I think we ought to keep our sense of wonder. And since librarians make that all possible, they amaze me too. But also, people, c'mon, libraries have rules.

All of this, I suppose, is one sub-point in my larger sense that studying the ancient past (rather more representative of most of human history than the present) impresses one with how marvelous our now is and so also the public-spirited folks that make that now possible.

tho id argue that as well is worth recognizing as valuable. most places - and like, even the usa /today/ - lacks that same sort of institution building as conspicuous philanthropy. i really think that’s an attitude we’d do well to try to recapture.
