Reading this thread by @DrMichaelJTayl1 , I looked up and started @BretDevereaux 's thesis. Am struck by the notion that a lorical hamata could weigh around 4-5 kg (cf Wheeler's argument that eg Hanson's notion of hoplite kit is far too heavy).https://twitter.com/DrMichaelJTayl1/status/1409147776546578433 …
A coat with relatively more, finer rings might bring the mass up a bit. For the book version of that argument, the upper-mass-bound for the lorica hamata is going to move up. Junkelmann's reconstructions were 8-9kg, with (based on the images) very fine rings.

Though I assume some of that extra weight is in the clasps, leather fringing of the shoulder-pads, etc. Basically, there's a lot of variance in mail. So rather than my 5-7kg range in the diss., I'm going to suggest a 5-9kg range for the book (and in an article I'm working on).

Hanson is wrong about the weight of the hoplite kit though. He takes Jarva directly, but Jarva's estimates are bonkers, assuming breastplates that are far too thick - I talk about this in my Macedonian chapter.
