Are we sure that the Argyraspides literally copied Roman equipment? Or did they just use heavy Galatian or Thorakitai equipment since that already existed?

You might argue that the Antigonids just suck, but its the explicit testimony of Polybius - hardly a friend to the Antigonids - that they had the best man-for-man quality phalanx around. Which seems supported by how far above their weight they punch vs. Seleucids and Lagids.
-
At some point, the theory of how flexible an army *could* be has to be tested against how flexible it actually is and the Romans win all of those tests. Which might suggest that getting a legion to work required more command authority delegated and thus more experienced NCOs.

Umm, no, that’s not what happened at Cynoscephalae. The Peltasts on the right pushed the Romans back, but the Roman right attacked the Chalkaspides before they could fully deploy……with elephants. A unit notorious for its decisive potential.

At which point, yes the Peltasts were outflanked, but that would be fatal for literally any other army. It wasn’t a special weakness of the phalanx in this case.
