So, #twitterstorians , a question: when did we start using the word 'nation' for the United States? The founding documents don't, but was it a common usage in the era of the founding era?
Clearly a normal usage by 1863, in the Gettysburg Address. Surely this has been studied?

A question: how can the Unites States be a Nation, if they are not a Nation-State? They can be considered a State, but not a Nation.
What an interesting question! Perhaps I have something to say about that, at some point.

That would be interesting. If I answer the question as an European the answer is easy (the US is not a Nation), but I would like to hear some other perspective. In Europe the "Vox societatis" is certainly "only nation-states are true States"
