Washington used it in his farewell address and at least the sixth and eighth state of the unions, so very early.
So, #twitterstorians , a question: when did we start using the word 'nation' for the United States? The founding documents don't, but was it a common usage in the era of the founding era?
Clearly a normal usage by 1863, in the Gettysburg Address. Surely this has been studied?

A question: how can the Unites States be a Nation, if they are not a Nation-State? They can be considered a State, but not a Nation.

I think Jim McPherson somewhere traced an increasing use of "nation" to designate the country during the course of the Civil War, along with a shift from "United States" as a plural noun to a singular noun.
