I've never encountered a scholar who still believes Hdt was a liar or an idiot, but it is a worringly common factoid about Antiquity in wider circles. It's generally attached to some anecdotal observation about army sizes or gold-digging ants.
I tend to say that 'Herodotus never lets the truth get in the way of a good story' but even that may be too harsh. Herodotus does have some true fibs though, unless there have been recent scholarly revisions to our assumptions about how far south and east he really traveled?

Yeah, I think that is very true. I think the contrast with Thucydides is instructive; Herodotus is telling us what he knows, but in a lot of cases, Thucydides is actively trying to get one over on you and he's a lot more deliberately clever about it.

I mean, it seems a slightly unfair measuring stick for Hdt when good stories were exactly what he set out to record. His passages on moral relativisim etc. suggest he would be very interested to discuss what you think this "truth" thing is and what it must look like
