So, here's a question: when your public scholarship comes up in an interview as an example of your academic activity (because public engagement matters) and you get asked "Do you monetize that?" ...how exactly are you supposed to respond?

I should note this is an honest question because I can never tell is the impetus behind that question is 1) raw curiosity that such a thing is possible or 2) highlight how unusually successful my public outreach project is or 3) an effort to shame me for making money off of it.

And I don't want to discount (1) there. Honestly, if grad student me met today's version of me, I think the first question I'd have for myself is, "wait, people give you money to write stuff? Like, a liveable amount of money?" with a tone of awe, confusion and reverence.
