Yeah, he's just wrong. That the Theban sacred band was 150 matched pairs of male lovers is the explicit, unanimous testimony of the sources (e.g. Plut. Pelop. 18.1-2). Polyaenus (2.5.1) and Athenaus (13.78) concur on the point.

There's a whole, fun debate to be had for if, say, Achilles and Patroclus were just comrades or lovers in the original content of the Iliad (later ancient Greeks understood them as lovers), but the attachments of the sacred band are not a point of meaningful uncertainty.

Honestly, given how limited the ancient source material is, it's a real challenge to manage to be decisively wrong on a point where there is no real uncertainty. Achievements in ignorance, I suppose.
