fwiw, I thought the suggestions were good ones. I mean, whatever we're doing, it's not working - losing Howard and probably UVM alone should be a strong enough signal there.

Yeah. Frankly, I think the SCS needs to organize the equivalent of a PR-strike team to coordinate national responses (as you suggest, in only slightly different terms).
As a discipline, we need to be ready to boil the oceans with op-eds (both national and local), petitions, testimonials, etc. Every university administration thinking of closing a classics department ought to have 'getting yelled at non-stop by SCS for months' on its 'cons' list.

But of course to do that, we'd need to (broken record time) value public-facing actions and outreach in hiring, tenure and recognition...and by and large the field doesn't.
