The borrowed shields is Xen. Hell. 4.4.10 And remember that Thermopylae was not supposed to be a last stand or a delaying action. The Greeks expected to hold the pass indefinitely, and failed. It was a defeat, pure and simple.

If I remember it right when they knew the game was up they tried to retreat. The 300 were part of a rearguard force which got separated and surrounded. The rest is, as they say, history.
