I can only assume a lot of people didn't pay much attention in history class if they missed that the connotations of the praetorian guard are essentially entirely negative and also the praetorians got wrecked against the regular legions in 69 and 192 and 312.https://twitter.com/willsommer/status/1402998688453038088 …

They get that the praetorian guard had a pretty good run of success as an elite force, and later almost unchecked power before they were cut down. Not the worst possible reference they could have found, to be honest

I mean, it's a bit like responding to somebody who calls himself "the new Genghis": hey, you know your descendants will be asking for IMF bailouts in 800 years, right? Sucker!

Were they that elite? The reputation that's reached me is of a bunch of guys who sat around in Rome, were corrupt and treacherous and didn't really have as much combat experience as regular legions.

The praetorians were certainly high status compared to regular soldiers, but their record against the legions was quite poor, as noted. They generally did go to the frontier to fight if the emperor himself went, but aren't particularly distinguished for excellence there.
