Yeah, if my students want to know about my personal life, they can follow me on twitter. Student-facing time is about learning, not telling my personal story or airing my grievances, politics, whatever.
My rule of thumb for being friends with students is that it only really becomes possible once they're not in my class anymore (e.g. after graduation). Before that, the student-teacher relationship and my obligations in that framework must take priority.

Ya know, I liked a number of my professors, talked with them about different stuff, sometimes they entertained groups of us at their homes. But it never occurred to me that they were or could be my friend. Same with students when I was on faculty. Why should a prof be so needy?

It's great to keep up with students. Now some are colleagues. I s'pose they could be called friends if I had a lower/fuzzier threshold therefore. But honestly that's evolved over years & not during the time of the teaching/mentoring years.
