My students aren't dumbasses, ADHD isn't a punchline, most students are not rambling in their papers & if they are it is by and large an issue of our explaining what we wanted. If you, as a teacher, talk about your personal life in a way students find uncomfortable that's on you.

Yeah, if my students want to know about my personal life, they can follow me on twitter. Student-facing time is about learning, not telling my personal story or airing my grievances, politics, whatever.

My rule of thumb for being friends with students is that it only really becomes possible once they're not in my class anymore (e.g. after graduation). Before that, the student-teacher relationship and my obligations in that framework must take priority.

Ya know, I liked a number of my professors, talked with them about different stuff, sometimes they entertained groups of us at their homes. But it never occurred to me that they were or could be my friend. Same with students when I was on faculty. Why should a prof be so needy?
