Looking at the models visually it really feels like the Classics experience I got is maybe even more heavily sequenced. Like, it's Gateway -> Languages -> Historical Training -> Specialty, to the point that ancient history training felt like a different step than languages.

My classics journey, in essence was: 1) Take Latin in high school 2) Undergrad history major who didn't know which history he wanted to do 3) Decide to do Roman, crash relearn Latin in undergrad 4) Post-Bacc year, more Latin learn Greek...

5) still not enough languages for grad study 6) MA in Classics dept. for 2 more years Latin and Greek 7) Still get rejected a ton from PhD programs 8) Third year hanging out in classics dept. getting more Latin and Greek 9) finally land a spot in an ancient history PHD
