So, I am a historian, rather than a lit teacher and from that perspective, some works, due to their influence, are more valuable to learn than others. Good history instruction often requires history and lit to be rowing together in time.

From a student's perspective, I think it's very difficult to understand much of history and literature after 1 CE if you aren't at least passingly familiar with The Bible.
