There is also quite a lot of post-classical history which is difficult to make sense of if you don't have at least passing knowledge not only of the Bible but also a basic grasp of the fundamentals of the doctrines that came out of it.
"Students should learn something about the world's largest religion in school" always struck me as a fairly obvious statement but as @BeijingPalmer notes, it gets caught up in fights from both sides.

But it should be stressed - this really isn't a case of 'lets do 'our' religion because it is 'ours'.' Rather it is the most printed book in human history and the core text to the world's largest religion. Of course students should be taught some basic understanding of it.
