I think you should learn the text that is literally the basis for half of the allusions in Western literature.
There is also quite a lot of post-classical history which is difficult to make sense of if you don't have at least passing knowledge not only of the Bible but also a basic grasp of the fundamentals of the doctrines that came out of it.

@BeijingPalmer notes, it gets caught up in fights from both sides. -
But it should be stressed - this really isn't a case of 'lets do 'our' religion because it is 'ours'.' Rather it is the most printed book in human history and the core text to the world's largest religion. Of course students should be taught some basic understanding of it.
