Is the love for MacArthur a generational thing? I can understand why most of the other controversial WW2 generals have their supporters, but I've not seen many redeeming qualities for MacArthur.
Trying to make his grandiose ideas work was really good training for his staff. If you could handle MacArthur productively, you could handle just about anyone.
He should have faced a court-martial for his (in)actions in the Philippines long before Truman was even Vice President, let alone his egregious insubordination later.
My Dad was an inf. platoon leader in 4 Pacific campaigns; one was under Mac--Leyte. Dad hated Macarthur. He always felt that Mac had pushed the Leyte campaign too fast. Mac had the prize of Luzon on his mind. Dad's regt. had the highest KIA/WIA of all those who fought on Leyte.
