There seems to be a real disconnect between the things classicists think connect with the public and thus do in 'public facing' forums and what - it seems to me - actually connects with the public? 1/16
And as a field, try to encourage scholars to routinely bounce from writing there to writing the same kinds of things, but for traditional media. And then, you know, actually give academic jobs to the people doing that work, which I think is the actual root problem here.

For sure, public outreach does need to be more highly respected in academia. I do think that we need to recognise it as a skill, though, and not necessarily one that everyone has/needs, and that those with it should be in a place to bring other scholars' work to a wider audience

I'd also throw into this, as a museum worker, that academics probably need to work more alongside the archaeological/history that's already part of our communities as a means of outreach. I know some do, but it feels like there could be more.
