Sure, in an academic article, or a carefully edited short piece for a traditional publication, you can get away with saying something once and then assuming the reader will carry that with them. Because there are you are *arguing* a single key point, not teaching a topic. 4/14

It is a minor irritant, but nonetheless I think it’s right for the reasons you suggest. I also think it helps low-decouplers and frees you to discuss the historical use of things in a balanced way, because you’ve acknowledged *in the same paragraph* the problems. Keep going!

"When the truth is uncomfortable, the wise reshape themselves, because the truth will not change" I love this phrase. Did you come up with that on the spot or did you read it somewhere?

For the record, I recently discovered your blog and just finished the sparta series. I think your repetitions of "slavery is bad" and "helots exist" were useful definitely made the statements more impactful. You have a clear thesis and it wouldn't have landed as well stated once.

I think you have this backwards - the statement is annoying to hear repeated *because* it's a clear truth, and people resent the implication that they need you to constantly repeat it in order for them to get it. We can figure out that slavery was bad without being told!
