I suspect it's because pushing too hard on slavery is often used to beat up on the United States as a nation. You don't need to like slavery to think that a nation which spent hundreds of thousands of lives in battle to end slavery might not deserve so much flak over the issue.

And no, I don't think that's what you're doing. But I think it is a Pavlovian response from people who spend too much time in political debates, and a fairly unsurprising one.
