Yeah, this is the big weakness of EU4, I almost never get past the mid 1700's

And a big strength of HOI4's constrained timeframe. (Also, of course, of its framing as telling the story of a specific (set of) war(s), giving the player permission to just declare victory and quit as soon as the system stabilizes ie would become boring.
