There is something really amusing about how Percy (the cat) attempts to bribe me with cuddles in order to get food. It never works, the cats food is via an auto-feeder with a timer. But he tries anyway. Makes me wonder...does this cat have a theory of the mind?

Because the sort of thinking that ends with, "the human provides food, the human *likes* when I brush against his leg and sit on his lap, so I will do these things in an effort to get food" feels like a surprisingly complex line of thinking for an animal with a tiny little brain.

As an aside, I don't think its an operant conditioning behavior because it never works. Oddly, the auto-feeders mean I can be really confident that it never works and the food happens at exactly the same time regardless.

My theory is that it's not theory of mind by the individual cat but selection over generations for particular behavior. Cats that are friendly toward humans, on balance, have more offspring. (Or did before we started fixing them.)

The thing is, Percy isn't generally friendly - he's friendly when he wants something. Very willful, wants-what-wants cat. But who knows.
