It doesn't need to be narrow drum-and-trumpets mil-hist either. Papers this year featured a lot of war-and-society approaches, war-and-gender approaches (e.g. 'military masculinities'), etc. Lots of innovative history, not just generals-and-battles (though some of that too).
Also, classicists, just putting this out there but 1) SMH has more and better drinks than SCS/AIA and also 2) they don't put it in Boston in January (lookin' at you SCS-2018 
).
